WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appear to be charting a course toward resetting relations after months of friction over tariffs, oil purchases, and India’s outreach to China.

Trump, who has recently faced criticism that New Delhi is tilting toward Beijing and Moscow, announced on September 10 that trade negotiations between the U.S. and India are back on track. The announcement came after Washington abruptly canceled an August trade delegation visit to New Delhi, citing unresolved disputes.

“I am pleased to announce that India, and the United States of America, are continuing negotiations to address the trade barriers between our two nations,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. Calling Modi a “very good friend,” he expressed confidence the two sides could quickly reach a “successful conclusion.”

The conciliatory tone marks a sharp turn from earlier months, when Trump doubled tariffs on Indian imports and accused India of “funding the war in Ukraine” through purchases of Russian oil. Those actions raised doubts about the durability of a partnership Trump himself once championed.

Adding to U.S. unease, Modi last month traveled to China for the first time in seven years, attending a summit hosted by President Xi Jinping where he was photographed warmly greeting Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Modi, however, echoed Trump’s optimism following the resumption of talks. “The United States and India are close friends and natural partners,” he said in a September 10 statement. “We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for our people.”

Trade officials from both countries are now expected to meet in person later this month, potentially reviving a deal Trump has long promised but never delivered. (with inputs from IANS)
