Trump Cancels $4 Billion In Climate Pledges

WASHINGTON, DC – The Trump administration has revoked $4 billion in U.S. commitments to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), a United Nations-backed initiative supporting over 100 nations in their efforts to combat climate changePolitico reported.

The fund confirmed the decision, marking an unprecedented move—no other country has previously rescinded pledged contributions. Unlike the first Trump administration, which allowed prior U.S. commitments to remain on the fund’s books, this decision fully eliminates the outstanding funds.

Established in 2010, the GCF directs financing toward clean energy and climate adaptation projects in developing nations, having approved $16 billion in funding to date. In 2023, the Biden administration reaffirmed a $3 billion pledge to the fund, matching a previous commitment from the Obama era.

That made the U.S. the single largest donor at $6 billion, but only $2 billion has actually been delivered, Politico said . Meanwhile, other nations—including Germany, France, Japan, and the U.K.—have contributed more in practice.

While the immediate financial impact on the GCF remains unchanged, the fund acknowledged that its long-term ambitions will be curtailed. “Looking ahead, the Fund aims to grow its total portfolio to at least $50 billion by 2030,” the GCF said in a statement. “If pledges are not fully realized, our ability to support the climate ambitions of developing countries will be constrained.”
