WASHINGTON, DC – India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission has received the 2026 Goddard Astronautics Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), recognizing the mission’s achievements in lunar exploration.

The award was presented May 21 during the AIAA ASCEND 2026 conference here, where India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, accepted the honor on behalf of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Chandrayaan-3 made history on Aug. 23, 2023, when India became the first country to successfully land a spacecraft near the Moon’s south pole, a region considered important for future lunar exploration and scientific research.

According to findings highlighted during the event, the mission provided data related to the composition of the lunar south polar surface, including chemical elements that scientists believe may help support future lunar missions.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Kwatra highlighted India’s expanding space ambitions under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Space Vision 2047 initiative, which includes plans related to deep-space exploration and human spaceflight programs.

Kwatra also emphasized growing cooperation between India and the United States in the space sector, including partnerships involving government agencies, research institutions and industry.

The Goddard Astronautics Award is among AIAA’s highest honors in astronautics. It is named after American rocket pioneer Robert H. Goddard, whose early work in liquid-fueled rockets helped shape modern space science.
