Veterans Take Center Stage At Chicago’s Devon Avenue I- Day Parade

CHICAGO, IL – Devon Avenue in Little India was a sea of flags, music and energy as the Federation of Indian Associations wrapped up its months-long patriotic celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence while highlighting India-U.S. ties.

This year, organizers chose to forgo Bollywood actors and instead honor retired military veterans and spiritual leaders. FIA President Hemant Patel said the aim was to draw a crowd focused on national spirit and to honor figures whose service could serve as an inspiration.

The morning began with the national anthems and Vande Mataram, setting a respectful tone as onlookers, families and marching groups gathered. A lineup of guests led the flag-unfurling ceremony, including Grand Marshal Major General N.K. Dhir, Israeli Consul General Elad Strohmayer and Lima Mathew from the Indian Consulate in Chicago.

They were joined by local officials, including 50th Ward Alderman Debra Silverstein and State Representative Ram Villivalam, along with spiritual guru Devkinandan Thakur and a group of retired military officers. Organizers also recognized 90-year-old Mohan Patel, who has helped set up the flag post for the past 30 years.

Floats rolling down the avenue featured portraits of freedom fighters and historical icons, including Bharat Mata, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Swami Vivekananda, Subhas Chandra Bose and Sardar Patel. Adding to the atmosphere, a traditional Dhol Tasha band from Maharashtra Mandal and the Chicago Bikers Club participated alongside local cultural organizations and senior centers.

Speeches during the event also touched on international ties. Consul General Strohmayer and Patel highlighted the partnership among the United States, India and Israel.

The day concluded with Garba and Bhangra performances.
