GAINESVILLE, FL – Authorities have arrested a 20-year-old Indian national in connection with an alleged fraud scheme that targeted an elderly Gainesville resident. The arrest followed a coordinated sting operation by federal and local law enforcement involving nearly $495,000 worth of gold bars.
Gurpinder Singh, who authorities say traveled from California to Florida in May to collect the gold, was taken into custody on May 31 at a Chevron gas station on SW Archer Road. According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and FBI agents carried out the operation, preventing the collection of the gold.
The scheme began when the woman received an email claiming that her bank account and Social Security number had been compromised. Authorities said the perpetrators persuaded her to protect her money by purchasing gold bars.
Acting on those instructions, the woman purchased more than $101,000 worth of gold from Coin and Jewelry Gallery, according to WCJB. The fraudsters later attempted to persuade her to acquire an additional $400,000 in gold.
Before that transaction could take place, FBI and IRS agents became aware of the situation and contacted the woman. Working with the victim, federal and local law enforcement arranged the sting operation at the Gainesville service station to identify and apprehend the individual sent to collect the gold.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Singh was allegedly involved in a broader scheme aimed at stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the victim.
He is currently being held without bond at the Alachua County Jail.
