Rahul Gandhi Wants Amit Shah Fired
NEW DELHI-Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on July 28 intensified his attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah over police excesses against students during the July 20 protest march to Parliament.
Addressing a press conference, Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove Union Home Minister Shah from office and order an independent Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the incident.
Gandhi alleged that the Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF), both under the Union Home Ministry, used excessive force against protesters, including pellet guns and lathis.
Holding the Home Minister responsible, he said there were only two possibilities: either Shah ordered the action or was unaware of it. “If he ordered it, he is culpable. If he did not know, then he is incompetent. In either case, he has to go,” Gandhi said.
The Congress leader said he had written to Amit Shah on July 25 seeking clarification on whether the use of pellet guns had been authorized but had received no response.
He also said the Opposition had collected photographic and video evidence identifying police personnel involved in the crackdown and questioned the presence of individuals in plain clothes during the operation.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Police on July 29 registered an FIR against BJP MLA Yashpal Suvarna after he said that Rahul Gandhi’s family would be “destroyed” in the same manner as the Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992.
Addressing a public program organized by the BJP in Udupi, Suvarna threatened the Congress leadership, stating: “If you continue to enact such dramas, just as our party workers destroyed the Babri Masjid in 1992 when our sentiments were hurt, the Congress dynasty and Rahul Gandhi’s family will likewise be destroyed.”
The remarks have triggered a major political controversy in Karnataka, with the Congress accusing the BJP of resorting to hate speech and intimidation. Video clips of the speech have since gone viral on social media, prompting demands for immediate legal action. (IANS)
