Sachin–Jigar Discuss Music, Creativity, And Going Global

MUMBAI – Music composers Sachin Sanghvi and Jigar Saraiya of the popular duo Sachin–Jigar believe Indian music has the potential to reach global audiences while retaining its distinct identity.

Promoting their latest film album, ‘Chand Mera Dil’, the duo reflected on the future of Indian music and the creative partnership that has shaped their success.

Addressing concerns about the growing influence of global music, Jigar Saraiya said the focus should be on taking Indian music to the world rather than worrying about outside influences.

“I think it’s only our responsibility that if something is going on globally, then how can we globalize our sound? How can we globalize our music? We have to do that. And this is a big fight. But our music is such that it can blend with any other music,” Jigar said.

He said international artists and audiences increasingly recognize the uniqueness of Indian music.

“In fact, when we go out or meet any other artist, they look at our music as global music. For them, the identity and uniqueness of our music is that we have to believe that. And we have to own our music as much as we own a foreign artist,” he said.

The conversation also turned to the duo’s creative process, with Sachin Sanghvi describing how their contrasting personalities help shape their work.

“We are two people. So, we are two sides of the coin. I think my job is to rationalize the chaos he has,” Sachin said of his longtime creative partner.

Describing Jigar’s approach to music, Sachin said, “He is a rebel. He doesn’t sleep. Sometimes he wakes up with the fear that if I don’t make a song today, then? There is a childlike hunger when he sees a new instrument.”

“My job, I feel in this combination, lots of times my job is to tell Jigar that you have done an amazing job. Sometimes to rationalize him. To bring in the order basically in this process,” he said.

He added that the balance works both ways. “When I am chaotic, he calms me down. So, it is not a particular role but it is a balancing act,” Sachin said.
