India Joins Symbolic UN Charter Signing, Reiterates Support
NEW YORK- India reaffirmed its commitment to the United Nations Charter ahead of UN Charter Day, with India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, describing the document as a symbol of “hope” for the country’s 1.4 billion people.
Harish made the remarks on June 16 after symbolically signing the Preamble of the UN Charter as part of a ceremony marking the upcoming commemoration of the 1945 signing of the document that established the United Nations.
The signing, organized ahead of UN Charter Day on June 26, was intended to reaffirm member states’ commitment to the principles of the Charter.
“The significance of the UN Charter for 1.4 billion citizens of India is, in one word, ‘ummeed’, meaning hope,” Harish said.
United Nations General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, who proposed the symbolic signing, described it as a “renewed expression of our collective commitment to the purpose and principle of the Charter”. (IANS)
