When Jaya Prada Set Off A Fashion Frenzy

MUMBAI-Veteran actress Jaya Prada reminisced about the immense craze surrounding the sarees she wore in the iconic song “Pyaar Ka Tohfa” from the 1984 blockbuster ‘Tohfa’, saying shops ran out of stock after the song became a massive hit.

Jaya Prada shared the memory while appearing as a special guest on the dance reality show ‘India’s Best Dancer Season 5.’

“The ‘Jaya Prada Saree’ became such a huge phenomenon that as the song grew in popularity, the demand for those sarees became so overwhelming that shops ran out of stock. Wherever I went, people would greet me with ‘Tohfa, Tohfa, Tohfa!’ Among all the songs in my career, I can confidently say this is one of the very best, and I feel extremely proud of it,” Jaya Prada said.

‘Tohfa’, starring Jeetendra, Jaya Prada and Sridevi, was the highest-grossing Indian film of 1984. The song “Pyaar Ka Tohfa”, composed by Bappi Lahiri with lyrics by Indeevar and vocals by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle, became one of the film’s biggest musical hits. (IANS)
