NYC Names Law Banning Horse Carriages After Indian Teen Romanch Mahajan

NEW YORK, NY-New York City Council has passed a law banning horse-drawn carriages, naming it Romanch’s Law in honour of Indian teenager Romanch Mahajan, who was killed in a Central Park accident involving a horse-drawn carriage in June.

The law was adopted on October 22. Romanch was trying to save his mother, Priya, when she was thrown from the carriage after the horse bolted. He struck his head on the ground as he dived after her and later died in hospital.

Romanch’s uncle, Gaurav Mahajan, attended a rally outside City Hall organised by supporters of the ban before the bill was passed.

“True justice means recognising that these gentle, majestic horses do not belong on the congested asphalt or trapped in dangerous traffic,” he said.

“On behalf of his parents and his brother, I leave New Yorkers with one final sacred request: please do not forget Romanch,” he added.

City Council Speaker Julie Menin said the legislation reflected the council’s commitment to animal welfare, public safety and worker protection.

“Our landmark vote to pass Romanch’s Law is a demonstration of this Council’s commitment to animal welfare, public safety, and worker protection,” she said.

Animal rights activists had campaigned for years to ban horse-drawn carriages but faced opposition from carriage owners and the union representing drivers. Romanch’s death gave fresh impetus to the effort.

The bill now goes to Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Even if he vetoes it, the council’s strong vote means the legislation can become law through a veto override.

Romanch had recently completed his higher secondary education at Angel’s Public School in Mamun, Pathankot, and was visiting New York with his parents and brother.

The family had been enjoying the sights of Central Park when the carriage driver stopped to take their photograph. The horse suddenly bolted, overturning the carriage. Romanch was fatally injured as he tried to save his mother. (IANS)
