WASHINGTON, DC– Neera Tanden is returning to leadership at the Center for American Progress (CAP), taking charge at a critical moment for the Democratic Party. After serving in the Biden administration, Tanden was appointed president and CEO of CAP on February 20. Her return comes as the party grapples with how to counter former President Donald Trump and reconnect with voters.

Tanden’s reappointment arrives as Democrats reflect on their performance following setbacks in the 2024 elections. Many within the party have acknowledged that they struggled to campaign effectively on economic issues. “It’s incumbent on us not to be defenders of the status quo, but to provide an alternative,” Tanden said in an interview. She highlighted recent Republican proposals, such as cuts to Medicaid, as opportunities for Democrats to contrast their priorities. Reuters reports that Tanden also suggested engaging with moderate Republicans like Sen. Josh Hawley, who has expressed concern over these cuts.

A veteran of the Clinton, Obama, and Biden administrations, Tanden has been a polarizing figure in politics, known for her sharp exchanges with critics. Reuters notes that she has drawn fire from both Republicans and progressives, with past remarks such as claiming Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has “more heart” than vampires, and comparing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to Voldemort.

Tanden’s return to CAP also comes at a time when the organization is facing financial challenges. Reuters reports that CAP recently laid off 8 percent of its workforce after Democratic donors warned they would withhold funding unless the party presented a clearer strategy moving forward
