South Asian Art Finds A Stage In Colorado
India-West Staff Reporter
ENGLEWOOD, CO – The Colorado South Asian Artists Group is set to host its inaugural exhibition, ‘Roots & Routes,’ at Englewood City Center starting September 5. This landmark event will showcase the work of 22 Colorado-based visual artists from the South Asian diaspora, with a free public reception. The exhibition, which explores themes of identity, heritage, and belonging, will run until October 5.
Co-curated by Bala Thiagarajan and Hadia Shaikh, ‘Roots & Routes’ uses painting, sculpture, and photography to capture the artists’ unique journeys. The title itself reflects the duality of maintaining strong cultural roots while navigating new paths in a different environment.
According to C-SAAG founder Thiagarajan, the exhibition is a powerful “statement about visibility and representation,” giving South Asian artists the chance to share their own stories with the wider Colorado community.
Artists featured in the show, like Anita Nagpal Schwartz and Maya Jade, echo this sentiment. Schwartz’s work reflects a personal connection to her family in India, while Jade’s art speaks to the responsibility of honoring ancestral sacrifices.
The C-SAAG group was established in 2025 to create a supportive network for South Asian artists and amplify their voices. Presented as part of CitySpark, an initiative to re-engage the Englewood community, the exhibition will also include artist talks and workshops to provide deeper insights into the creative processes.
