Gurinder Chadha: ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ & Sikh Philosophy Inspire New Film

LOS ANGELES, CA -As filmmaker Gurinder Chadha prepares for the December 12 release of her latest film, ‘Christmas Karma’, she discussed the creative inspirations behind the holiday musical.

Chadha revealed that her affinity for classic holiday storytelling begins with a cherished annual family ritual. “For me Christmas begins with my annual family tradition, where I take my children to watch ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ at the Prince Charles Cinema in London,” she shared. The director added that she “cried buckets at the end while being moved by its life-affirming message. That love for classic holiday storytelling inspired ‘Christmas Karma’.”

Chadha described the film as her “ode to Dickens and Capra with a contemporary twist.” ‘Christmas Karma’ is a festive, fresh, and feel-good musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic ‘A Christmas Carol’. The film explores what Christmas truly means in today’s divided world, emphasizing how kindness, empathy, and hope can still bridge hearts.

The project is also deeply infused with Sikh philosophy. Chadha explained, “‘Living is Giving’ is part of the teachings of Guru Nanak and Sikhism. Being a Sikh, the core message of ‘Ek On Khar’ (We are all one) resonates heavily for me in the making of my film.”

‘The Big Bang Theory’ star Kunal Nayyar leads the cast as Mr. Sood, the film’s modern-day Scrooge. He is followed on an unforgettable journey by the three Ghosts of Christmas, played by Eva Longoria, Billy Porter, and Boy George, who help him confront his demons and discover that kindness is the real meaning of Christmas.
