LOS ANGELES, CA – American pop singer Nick Jonas has spoken about the difficult circumstances surrounding the birth of his daughter Malti, who needed to be resuscitated shortly after she was born.

Speaking on the ‘On Purpose’ podcast, Nick said Malti arrived much earlier than expected. “She came into the world under very intense circumstances. We were expecting her to arrive in April, and then we got a call that it was going to be sooner,” he shared.

Recalling the moment of her birth, Nick said the experience was frightening. “She was born via surrogate. We got to the hospital, and when she came out, she weighed 1 pound 11 ounces and was purple,” he said.

Malti spent nearly 100 days in a neonatal intensive care unit, a period Nick described as deeply challenging. He credited the NICU staff for saving her life. “These angels at the NICU resuscitated her in that moment, got her stabilized, intubated her, and took care of everything very quickly,” he said.

Because it was during the COVID period, Nick and his wife Priyanka Chopra took turns spending long hours at the hospital. “We did 12-hour shifts for about three and a half months. Just driving back and forth every day and seeing each other like passing ships was intense,” he said, adding that the experience has stayed with him. He described the nurses as “truly angels.”

Nick said Malti is now aware of the early struggles she faced. “She knows about the first chapter of her life,” he said. “Every day feels like a gift, and you can see it in how she experiences the world. I don’t think she remembers anything consciously, but spiritually, I believe there’s a deep sense of gratitude in her.”
