MUMBAI – Mumbai will host The Earthshot Prize in November 2026, bringing the world’s most prominent environmental award to India for the first time. The announcement was made February 17, marking a major moment for the country’s growing role in global climate leadership.

Founded in 2020 by Prince William, the Prince of Wales, The Earthshot Prize was inspired by John F. Kennedy’s 1962 Moonshot speech and aims to drive urgent environmental solutions within a decade. Now five years into what organizers call the Earthshot decade, the initiative has identified more than 5,600 environmental innovations from 156 countries, awarded £25 million to winners and helped finalists secure over $500 million in investment and philanthropy.

In a statement announcing Mumbai as host city, William said he was delighted to bring the Prize to India, describing the country as one of the world’s most important forces for climate and nature. He emphasized that solutions scaled successfully in India have the power to inspire global progress, adding that urgency and optimism must guide efforts to repair and restore the planet by 2030.

The multi day celebration in Mumbai will culminate in an awards ceremony at which five environmental leaders will each receive £1 million to accelerate their solutions. The event will bring together business leaders, investors, philanthropists and environmental innovators as part of a broader summit highlighting practical climate action.

India already has a strong track record within the Prize. It is home to more Earthshot Prize winners and finalists than any other country, including four winners. Among them are S4S Technologies, recognized in 2023 for tackling food waste with solar powered processing for small farmers, and Boomitra, which supports regenerative agriculture and soil carbon capture. Other Indian innovators such as Kheyti and Takachar have also been honored for climate resilient farming and reducing agricultural burning.

Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, said hosting the Prize would focus global attention on India’s sustainability leadership and its commitment to translating climate goals into concrete action.

Mumbai now joins previous host cities including Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Singapore, Boston and London as global platforms for environmental ambition.
