HOUSTON, TX- A one-woman theatrical portrayal of Kasturba Gandhi by performer Roopa Mohan drew a standing-room-only audience at the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston, highlighting renewed interest in lesser-known voices from India’s freedom movement.

Titled ‘Kasturba Gandhi – A Chautauqua Portrayal’, the performance presented an intimate interpretation of Kasturba Gandhi’s life, focusing on her resilience, moral strength, and role alongside Mahatma Gandhi during India’s struggle for independence. Through narrative storytelling, Mohan sought to foreground Kasturba’s individual identity beyond her association with her husband.

“Kasturba is so often invisible in the historical narrative — standing quietly in the background of her husband’s story. But she was a woman of extraordinary will and conviction. It was a profound honor to give her a voice, and to share that voice with an audience so eager to listen,” Mohan said during the program.

The event concluded with an audience interaction session moderated by Houston-based author Sita Kapadia, a former professor at the City University of New York, whose work focuses on Gandhian philosophy, women’s issues, and nonviolent resistance.

Organizers said the strong turnout reflected growing community engagement with cultural programming that re-examines historical narratives and highlights underrepresented figures.

The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston hosted the event as part of its ongoing efforts to explore the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and the broader relevance of nonviolence in contemporary society.
