ORANGE, CA –The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin Los Angeles chapter celebrated Vaisakhi, one of India’s most significant spring festivals, with a vibrant cultural program that drew more than 250 attendees.
Held in a packed hall here on April 17, the event brought together members of the Indian diaspora representing multiple states, reflecting the festival’s broader cultural resonance beyond its Punjabi roots. Vaisakhi, traditionally marking the harvest season and the founding of the Khalsa in Sikh history, was observed with a blend of spirituality, music, and dance.
Kewal Kanda, Vice President of GOPIO International, addressed the gathering and emphasized the organization’s role in advocating for the needs and concerns of the Indian diaspora worldwide. Kanda praised GOPIO-LA President Baljinder Tahim, thanking him for his leadership in strengthening community engagement.
The event opened on a devotional note with spiritual singing by Sandeep Singh and his two young sons, setting a reflective tone for the evening. Jimmy Singh followed with an overview of Vaisakhi’s significance, explaining its historical and cultural importance to the audience.
Cultural performances formed the centerpiece of the celebration. Youth performers from Got Bhangra Academy delivered high-energy routines, while Punjabi folk dancers brought traditional forms to life with electrifying presentations. The program also featured live music by singers Gagandeep Siddhu and Priya Kumar, whose upbeat songs encouraged audience participation and had many on their feet.
Beyond the stage, the event offered a rich cultural experience. Attendees enjoyed an array of traditional foods, including popular Punjabi sweets, while vendors displayed jewelry and clothing reflecting regional styles. The rhythmic beats of the dhol, along with performances of bhangra, boliyan, and gidda by women performers, added to the festive atmosphere.
