I’m Only 10th Pass: Diljit Dosanjh Reacts To Canadian University Course On Him
India-West News Desk
MUMBAI – Diljit Dosanjh has reacted with characteristic humility and humor to a Canadian university course centered on his life and career, saying he remains unsure what exactly students will be taught about him.
Appearing in a conversation with Jimmy Fallon on ‘The Tonight Show’, Dosanjh acknowledged the course but admitted he has little insight into its academic scope. “I don’t know, I’m not going to college or university. I’m 10th pass, that’s why my English is bad. But I don’t know about that,” he said, adding with a laugh that he had heard a Toronto university had launched such a program.
The course, introduced in January 2026 at Toronto Metropolitan University through its Creative School in partnership with Billboard Canada, marks a first in Canada. Listed as RTA 950, it is the country’s first university course dedicated to a Punjabi artist, examining Dosanjh’s rise and the broader cultural and business implications of his success.
Developers say the curriculum goes beyond biography. It explores how Punjabi music has evolved by blending folk traditions with hip hop and global pop, how artists cultivate international fanbases, and how cultural identity can function as a strategic asset in the music industry. The course also looks at how music connects diasporic communities across borders.
The academic initiative arrives amid a broader surge in Punjabi music’s visibility in Canada, often described as the Punjabi wave, led by artists blending regional sounds with contemporary genres. Canada, home to one of the largest Punjabi diasporas, has seen this influence reflected in mainstream recognition, including new categories at major awards honoring South Asian music.
Dosanjh’s own career has played a central role in that shift. From sold-out arena shows in Toronto and Vancouver to becoming the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella, his trajectory has underscored the global reach of Punjabi music.
