LAUSD Race Sparks Clash Over Gender Expectations

LOS ANGELES, CA – A political dispute tied to the Los Angeles Unified School District Board race has expanded into a broader debate over women’s political speech, online conduct, and transparency in public discussions.

The controversy involves attorney Mitsu Chavda, wife of LAUSD School Board candidate Ankur Patel, after she publicly criticized incumbent District 4 board member Nick Melvoin and voiced support for Patel in an online discussion forum.

According to statements released by the Patel campaign and individuals following the exchange, the discussion shifted away from LAUSD governance issues and toward criticism over whether Chavda had sufficiently identified herself through her relationship to the candidate while expressing political opinions online.

Campaign supporters argued that Chavda’s connection to Patel was already publicly known through campaign events, social media posts, and public records. They said the backlash focused more on discrediting her than addressing the policy issues she raised.

“What started as disagreement over politics escalated into attempts to publicly shame, pressure, and silence me for expressing independent political opinions,” Chavda said in a statement.

She also said she objected to expectations that her views should be framed primarily through her marital relationship before being considered legitimate in public discourse.

The dispute intensified after moderators of the online forum publicly tagged Patel over alleged ethics and transparency concerns. According to the campaign, portions of the discussion were later removed after Patel responded publicly, prompting criticism from supporters who accused moderators of selectively handling the exchange.

“You cannot publicly summon someone into a discussion in the name of ethics and transparency, then selectively remove the exchange once the response no longer fits the narrative being pushed,” Chavda stated.

The campaign also expressed concern over attempts to characterize political commentary and personal opinion as harassment while escalating the matter through references to ethics complaints, legal action, and media involvement.

Patel defended his wife’s right to express independent political views and rejected what he described as expectations that he should control or regulate her public speech.

“Mitsu is an independent individual with her own identity, opinions, and constitutional rights,” Patel said in a statement. “If people want to debate my platform, my policies, or the future of LAUSD, I welcome that conversation wholeheartedly.”

The Ankur Patel for LAUSD School Board campaign said it remains focused on education, accountability, and issues affecting families across District 4.
