BRUNSWICK, ME– Former Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah finished the June 9 Democratic primary for governor with a narrow lead, though the final outcome remains uncertain. Because no candidate surpassed the 50 percent threshold required for an outright victory, the state’s ranked-choice voting system will now redistribute secondary preferences to determine the nominee.
Addressing supporters at a watch party in Brunswick, Dr. Shah emphasized his commitment to the future. “While we will not have a final certified result tonight, there is still much to celebrate,” Shah said. “We are not here to make history. We are here to make a difference.” He focused his remarks on his campaign’s core mission of tackling state challenges, including healthcare, housing, and economic affordability.
Other candidates also weighed in as the state moved toward a final decision. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who also appeared on the ballot, highlighted the high voter turnout across the state, calling it a “huge year for Democrats.” Former House Speaker Hannah Pingree emphasized the economic pressures facing Maine families, noting that voters are seeking a “tough” leader to address the rising costs of housing and energy. Meanwhile, former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson expressed pride in his campaign’s efforts, describing the opportunity to serve as a meaningful goal.
The Secretary of State’s office is now proceeding with the ranked-choice tabulation in Augusta, with results expected by Friday, June 19.
