AHMEDABAD  Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, turned out to be a supporter of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and was in attendance here to witness the franchise secure its first Indian Premier League title, defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) on June 3.

While some part of the internet expected Sunak, a Punjabi to cheer for Preity Zinta-owned Punjab Kings, he backed his in-law’s – Narayan and Sudha Murthy –  home team. The politician was seen in the stands with myriad emotions with pictures going viral.

Sunak was joined by his wife, Akshata Murty, as they cheered for the Bengaluru-based team from the stands. A vocal supporter of RCB, Sunak has previously cited his wife’s family connection to Bangalore as the reason behind his loyalty. He has also noted that one of his prized possessions is a bat gifted to him by Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar — previously used by RCB stalwart Virat Kohli. “I’m married into a Bangalore family, so RCB is my team,” Sunak said, recalling how he had cheered for the franchise even while at Downing Street.

Following RCB’s win, Sunak shared a celebratory selfie with his wife on X (formerly Twitter), captioned, “Let’s go @RCBTweets.”
