BALTIMORE, MD– The Trump administration is working to reinstate nearly 25,000 federal employees it recently fired after a court ruled the dismissals likely violated federal regulations.

In documents filed on March 17 in a Baltimore federal court, officials from 18 government agencies confirmed they are bringing back affected workers, placing them on administrative leave for now, reported Reuters. This is the first time the administration has fully acknowledged the mass firings, which had been widely reported but not officially detailed.

Among the hardest-hit agencies, the Treasury Department let go of 7,600 workers, the Department of Agriculture cut 5,700 jobs, and the Department of Health and Human Services dismissed more than 3,200 employees said Reuters.

U.S. District Judge James Bredar ruled on March 13 that the firings broke federal layoff regulations and ordered the workers to be reinstated while the case continues. A lawsuit, filed by 19 Democrat-led states and Washington, D.C., argues the mass dismissals could lead to more unemployment claims and put extra pressure on state-funded services.

The Trump administration has appealed the ruling and asked a higher court in Richmond, Virginia, to put the order on hold. A separate court in San Francisco also ruled that probationary workers at six agencies, including the Department of Defense, must be reinstated. That decision is also being challenged, noted Reuters.

Government officials say rehiring so many employees at once is causing major disruptions. They also warn that if the court overturns the ruling, agencies may have to fire these workers again, adding to the uncertainty.
