NEW DELHI- FIFA has updated its Stadium Code of Conduct just a week before the FIFA World Cup begins on June 11, banning fans from bringing reusable plastic water bottles into stadiums across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The tournament will run from June 11 to July 19.

Last month, FIFA’s Stadium Code of Conduct stated that “empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles, up to (1 liter in) capacity, may be brought into the stadium.”

However, in the updated code released on June 2, FIFA said that “reusable water bottles may not be brought into the Stadium.”

Under the revised code, FIFA prohibits reusable water bottles and other containers that could be thrown or cause injury.

The updated policy also limits liquids brought into stadiums, with exceptions for baby milk, sterilized water for children, certain medically required liquids, and small hand sanitizer containers.

According to The Athletic, FIFA said the decision was intended to “prohibit bottles to prevent risk and injury to players and attendees” and noted that several World Cup venues already prohibit outside bottles.

The move has raised concerns among some fans about access to drinking water and coping with high temperatures during matches.

FIFA said it is working with host city committees and local authorities on heat-mitigation measures, including misting stations, hydration stations, cooling tents, and fans around stadiums.

The organization added that water bottle prices during the FIFA World Cup 2026 will remain consistent with pricing at other events held at each venue. (IANS)
