WASHINGTON, DC – Indian American lawmakers are slamming the Senate’s passage of Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and spending package, branding it everything from the “Big Bad Betrayal” to the “most cruel, harmful, and immoral” bill in recent memory.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed the Senate after more than 24 hours of tense debate, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. The legislation now returns to the House, where its fate remains uncertain. With only a slim majority, House Republicans can afford to lose just three votes.

The bill, which cleared the House earlier by a single vote before Senate amendments, faces renewed resistance—particularly from Indian American legistlators, who have called it a direct assault on America’s working class and vulnerable populations.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) called it “Trump’s Big Bad Betrayal,”  and urged action on the part of every citizen. “It’s not too late to stop this bill — it has to come back to the House for another vote. Call your representative NOW and tell them to VOTE NO.”

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) said Senate Republicans had “just rammed through a budget bill that guts our social safety net and slashes over $1 trillion from Medicaid—all to bankroll massive tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.” He called the move “a moral failure,” warning that “millions will lose health care, families will go hungry, and the ultra-wealthy will cash in.”

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) pointed to the deep Medicaid and SNAP cuts: “If Trump’s budget bill passes, 2 million Americans will lose SNAP benefits,” he said. “Americans will go hungry so the ultra-wealthy can reap a bigger tax break.” He warned that the bill would cause 11.8 million Americans to lose insurance by 2034 and called the cuts “immoral and an attack on ordinary Americans.” Khanna also blasted fossil fuel subsidies in the bill, saying, “Big Oil has fleeced the American public for decades. It’s past time Congress repealed fossil fuel subsidies and stopped rewarding Big Oil with tax breaks.”

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) didn’t hold back. “Friends, Senate just passed President Trump’s big, ugly, deficit-raising, Medicaid-cutting, shafting-the-poor-and-working-class, making-the-rich-even-richer megabill by a single vote,” he said. “This bill will raise [the] deficit by $3.3T, make 16 million Americans lose their health care, [and] two million will lose food stamps. While corporations and the wealthy get $4.5 trillion in new tax breaks.”

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) criticized the Senate changes harshly: “Old version: slashed Medicaid, cut clean energy, exploded the debt. New version: slashes more Medicaid, cuts more clean energy, raises the debt even more.” He warned that “nearly 17 million Americans are projected to lose their health insurance because of the Trump Administration’s Big Ugly Bill.”

Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA) underscored party unity against the legislation: “House Democrats stand united against this harmful bill that will strip at least 16 million Americans of their health care. We must defeat this.”

Trump has pushed Congress to finalize the bill by July 4, but with razor-thin margins and growing resistance, the final outcome could be up again for more debate.

  • I am not surprised since they are all Democrat Donkeys with no common sense! I am an independent, but they all oppose everything that comes from Republicans. They are all driving this country into a Third World socialist country, perhaps they came from!
