Indian Migrants To Be Deported With Temporary Stop In Costa Rica

WASHINGTON, DC – A group of those who entered the U.S. illegally will be deported this week, with Costa Rica serving as a temporary stop before their repatriation. The deportation flight, carrying Indians along with migrants from Central Asia, is scheduled to arrive in Costa Rica’s capital, San José, on February 19.

The deportees will be housed in a temporary migrant center near the Panama border before being sent to their home countries. The repatriation process is being coordinated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and fully funded by the U.S. government.

Costa Rica, which has agreed to facilitate the transit of deportees, confirmed that its role is to “serve as a bridge” for migrants returning to their countries of origin. The Central American nation joins Panama and Guatemala in cooperating with the U.S. on this initiative.

This initiative is part of a broader U.S. strategy to manage illegal immigration by securing cooperation from regional partners. The Trump administration has swiftly arranged agreements with Panama, Guatemala, and Costa Rica to facilitate the repatriation of migrants who are difficult to deport directly.

Panama recently received a similar deportation flight carrying migrants from India, Afghanistan, China, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
