CHICAGO, IL – Cincinnati’s first Asian American mayor, Aftab Pureval, will take the stage at the ongoing Democratic National Convention, say media reports. Pureval, who has been a staunch supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris since she was announced as the Democratic presidential candidate, views this opportunity as deeply personal.
Reflecting on Harris’ candidacy, Pureval spoke to The Enquirer about the profound impact it would have on his parents, who emigrated from India and Tibet. “I know for a fact there’s no way they would dream in my mom’s lifetime we would elect an Indian American for president,” he told the media outlet.
He serves on Harris’ national advisory board and is a voting member of the Democratic Party’s platform committee.
In the days following Harris’ nomination, Pureval has been actively campaigning, participating in events across the country, including a South Asians for America gathering in Minnesota and a Harris event in Illinois, alongside Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Other than marquee speakers, other names are not highlighted by the DNC till the day of but usually, these slots are reserved for those the party sees as upcoming stars.
