NEW YORK, NY –The reigning WNBA Champion New York Liberty have added Sonia Raman to their 2025 coaching staff as an assistant coach, the team announced on January 13. Raman will join head coach Sandy Brondello, a two-time WNBA Champion, along with returning assistants Olaf Lange and Zach O’Brien as the Liberty aim to defend their title.

Raman arrives in New York after spending five seasons (2020-2024) as an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies, helping lead the team to three NBA postseason appearances. Before her NBA tenure, she served as the head coach of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (women’s basketball team from 2008 to 2020, becoming the program’s all-time winningest coach.

“We are excited to welcome Sonia to New York as we prepare for our title defense in 2025,” said Brondello. “Specializing in the offensive side of the ball, she brings a wealth of experience to our staff and aligns with our core principles of play as we continue to evolve.”

A Massachusetts native, Raman attended Framingham High School before enrolling at Tufts University in 1992, where she walked on to the basketball team. She played as a guard off the bench until a car accident in her junior year left her with a broken leg, sidelining her for the season. During her recovery, she developed her coaching instincts by studying the game and mentoring teammates. She returned as a co-captain for her senior year and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. She later earned a Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School in 2001.

Following law school, Raman worked for Fidelity Investments and the U.S. Department of Labor before transitioning into coaching full-time.

Born to Indian immigrant parents—her mother from Nagpur and her father from Chennai—Raman has been a trailblazer in basketball, breaking barriers as one of the few Indian American coaches in professional sports. Her addition to the Liberty staff brings a wealth of experience as New York looks to build on its championship success in the upcoming WNBA season.
