SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Nitin Sonawane, a 33-year-old engineer and walking peace messenger from the small town of Rashin in Maharashtra, is currently in the United States on a journey to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. Since 2016, Sonawane has been traveling the world to spread a message of peace, and now he is walking across the U.S. as part of his ongoing mission.

His aims to cover 4,000 miles, spanning 19 states and 26 major cities, from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. The journey which began on India’s Republic Day, January 26, is expected to culminate on August 18, taking him through some of America’s most iconic locations.

“I want people to see the world as one big family,” Sonawane said. “Countries should help, not harm, each other,” he told India-West. His walk—roughly nine million steps point-to-point, with an additional million as he visits communities—aims to promote nonviolence, equality, and humanity. He harbors the hope of meeting the U.S. president to share the lessons he’s learned while previously traveling through 51 countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, covering over 40,000 km by foot and bicycle.

Sonawane’s journey began with a deep personal shift at the age of 24. Having worked as an electronics engineer, he left the comfort of his job to follow the path of Gandhian values. “I felt there was more to life than just existing,” he explained to India-West, recounting how he left behind a conventional career in search of truth and meaning.

Traveling alone with only a trolley carrying a tent and food, Sonawane’s path is one of introspection and connection. He engages with local communities, learning from their experiences while sharing his own. “There is a lot of goodness in the people I meet,” he says.

Despite initial resistance from his family, Sonawane’s mission to spread Gandhi’s teachings has been met with growing support, both from individuals and organizations that fund his basic expenses.

Sonawane is also active on social media through his website, slowmannitin.com, and YouTube channel @slowmanNitin, where he documents his journey and reflections. After completing his U.S. walk, he plans to continue his peace mission in Russia.
