CARSON CITY, NV- Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has signed Senate Bill 201 into law, permitting residents to display religious items like Hindu torans and Jewish mezuzahs on their doors. Effective October 1, the law ensures freedom of religious expression at home and mandates respectful handling of such displays during maintenance.

The bill, SB 201, was a joint initiative by the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), two prominent advocacy organizations in the U.S. It was introduced by Senators Pazina, Neal, Flores, Scheible, and Krasner, and Assemblymembers Roth and Nguyen. The legislation allows religious displays in dwellings no larger than 12″ x 36″.

A key aspect of the new law sets a precedent by requiring maintenance workers to store religious displays in a manner that preserves their sanctity until they can be safely returned after work is complete.

The bill aims to revise Chapter 116 of the Nevada Revised Statutes to address limitations previously placed by homeowners’ associations and rental agreements. Its main provision prohibits association executive boards and unit owners who rent or lease their units from banning the display of religious items in spaces exclusively occupied by owners or residents. The bill passed the Senate on April 18 and the Assembly on May 23, according to a report in The Las Vegas Review-Journal.
