BOSTON, MA – Boston University School of Hospitality Administration (BU SHA) fourth annual ICON award was given to Padma Lakshmi, an Emmy-nominated producer, television host, food expert, and a New York Times best-selling author, as well as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.

The award is given annually to recognize innovators who create new and transformative paradigms in hospitality and the award ceremony and reception concluded the school’s marquee event, the Hospitality Leadership Summit on April 4.

The event which brings together students, faculty, and industry colleagues saw the Dean of Boston University School of Hospitality Administration Arun Upneja interviewing Padma Lakshmi.

Their conversation touched on causes important to Lakshmi, such as her work as cofounder of Endo Found, a nonprofit dedicated to raising money and advocating for those with endometriosis, her work in the hospitality industry, her upbringing in India, women’s rights, and more.

Lakshmi said she never expected to work in the food industry, given that she was a theater major. “I come at food from a very personal point of view, through my writing and my television shows, and I really think what [we] do is not so much about commerce and business, but it’s about welcoming [a] stranger into your space and making them feel cared for,” she said. “At the end of the day I think everyone needs to learn how to do that, even if they don’t work in the industry. For me, hospitality has always been about making it easier for people who you welcome into your home. I’m so honored that you would give me this award and welcome me into your fold.”

To which the dean quipped, “You’re welcome to come to our grad program, either as a student or a guest lecturer!”

“I am honored to be recognized by Boston University School of Hospitality Administration and to support the school’s mission to make the world a more hospitable place for all,” said Padma Lakshmi. “Fostering leaders who are committed to creating memorable, joyful experiences that connect people is important to both society and humanity.”

Padma Lakshmi is the creator of the critically acclaimed and Emmy-nominated Hulu series “Taste the Nation,” which is the recipient of a James Beard Foundation Award top prize in Visual Media – Long Form. Lakshmi served as host and executive producer for 19 seasons of Bravo’s two-time Emmy-winning series “Top Chef,” which has been nominated for 47 Emmys, including her five-time nomination for Outstanding Host for a Reality-Competition Program.
