WASHINGTON, DC – The annual State Department report on human rights practices addresses various issues in India. It covers the ethnic conflict in Manipur, tax raids on the British Broadcasting Corporation, and the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by a Gujarat court.

Regarding the situation in Manipur, the report details significant human rights abuses following clashes between the Kuki and Meitei ethnic groups. Media reports indicate a toll of at least 175 fatalities and over 60,000 displaced individuals between May 3 and November 15. The conflict resulted in widespread destruction of property, including homes, businesses, and places of worship, along with reports of sexual assault and other forms of violence. Local human rights organizations, minority political parties, and affected communities criticized the national government for delays in addressing the violence and providing humanitarian aid.

The report further highlights instances of disinformation tactics targeting civil society organizations, religious minorities such as Sikhs and Muslims, and political opposition. It notes cases of journalists and human rights activists in Jammu and Kashmir facing harassment, assaults, interrogations, raids, fabricated charges, and restrictions on movement since 2019.

Concerning the BBC tax raids, while official explanations cited irregular tax payments, the report indicates broader implications. Authorities reportedly seized equipment belonging to journalists unrelated to the organization’s financial affairs.

The report also highlights positive strides in human rights and freedom of expression. Notably, it acknowledges the government’s approval for Shia Muslims to observe a Muharram event in Srinagar in July—an unprecedented move since its prohibition in 1989.

India’s past criticisms of US reports on human rights and religious freedoms are also mentioned. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs denounced what it deemed as biased and ill-informed commentary from US officials, labeling it as undermining the credibility of such reports. Additionally, expressed its rejection of perceived interference in internal affairs.

  • NPR TV had a news coverage on Manipur and showed scenes similar to what is happening in Palestine regarding 60,000 displaced as 200 churches were destroyed.

  • This Modi has imposed an undeclared emergency, became bigger dictator than Hitler, dividing population on religious lines. Giving federal funds to the States where BJP is in power and neglecting other States where they are not in power. His only job is to criticize Nehru and his family and claiming that India developed only after 2014 when he came to power. One of the actress, Kangna Ranaut(who was trashed by Bollywood), claims that India got freedom in 2014 and not in 1947. The present election in India is the most disgraceful. USA 🇺🇸 must shun Modi completely and put economic sanction on India for buying gas from 🇷🇺.

  • What happened to the Hindus under Congress rule and the Kashmiri Pundits displaced during the Congress Rule? Modi has brought about big changes in India in 10 years which slowly happened under the Congress rule over 70 years.

  • I think State Department’s priorities are misplaced. They need to look into countries such as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, etc. who are really abusing human rights.

  • “The annual State Department report on human rights practices addresses various issues in India.”

Human rights issue is a global issue and should be addressed by the United Nations, not by the United States. The United States must focus on its own issues and not interfere with the internal matters of other countries. An argument is made that the United Nations is dysfunctional, ineffective, and unfair. Well, then why not reform the United Nations?
