Trump Says He Will Create An External Revenue Service To Collect Tariffs

India-West News Desk

WASHINGTON, DC – Donald Trump announced plans on January 14, to establish the External Revenue Service, a new agency aimed at collecting tariffs, duties, and revenue from foreign entities benefiting from trade with the US.

Criticizing the nation’s reliance on domestic taxes through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Trump emphasized the need for a shift in the revenue model. “For far too long, we have relied on taxing our Great People using the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Through soft and pathetically weak trade agreements, the American economy has delivered growth and prosperity to the world while taxing ourselves,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The president-elect declared January 20, 2025, as the launch date for the ERS. “It is time for that to change. I will create the External Revenue Service to collect tariffs, duties, and all revenue from foreign sources. Those profiting from trade with us will finally start paying their fair share. January 20, 2025, will mark the birth of the ERS. Make America Great Again!”

The IRS, which oversees domestic tax collection, operates under the authority of the Treasury Secretary.

Currently, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is responsible for collecting tariffs.
