SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla has called for higher capital gains taxes, saying the US tax system should place greater emphasis on rewarding labor as technology continues to generate significant wealth for investors.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, the founder of Khosla Ventures said the technology boom has largely benefited investors, while many wage earners have struggled to keep pace.

“We need to tilt the seesaw towards labor and labor contributions to the economy, not towards capital contributions,” Khosla said.

The veteran investor also spoke about the role of design thinking in his professional and personal success.

“I think most of my success is because of my design thinking. I designed everything from furniture to lifestyles to buildings,” he said, adding that he even spent time refining details such as office paper towel dispensers.

Khosla later expanded on the idea in a post on X, writing, “Most people don’t realize how important design thinking is to a better life.” He added that good design “isn’t about cost,” but about how things are organized and the values they embody.

His comments come as policymakers and business leaders in the United States continue to debate how the economic gains from artificial intelligence should be shared.

Last month, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) renewed her call for an AI tax, arguing that the trillions of dollars the technology could generate should help fund public services such as healthcare, education and worker support, rather than further enriching billionaires.
