Hotmail Pioneer Sabeer Bhatia’s Two-Decade Wait For A Home Booked In 2012

NEW DELHI-For many Indians living overseas, buying a home back home is more than an investment. It is often a place to stay during visits, a future retirement home, or a way to stay connected to their roots. A post by entrepreneur and Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia has now brought renewed attention to the uncertainty many buyers face when housing projects are delayed for years.

Bhatia posted that an ultra-luxury apartment he booked in India in 2012 is now expected to be handed over only in 2032, stretching the wait for possession to two decades.

“I booked an ultra-luxury apartment in India in 2012. The project has gone through much drama. I’m told I’ll now get possession in 2032. Is the 20 years wait worth it?” he wrote.

In another post, Bhatia reflected on how much time had passed since he made the purchase. He said he had booked the apartment as a young man, hoping it would become a showcase home whenever he was in India. By the time possession is finally offered, he said, he would be left wondering whether waiting 20 years for the property was worth it.

His remarks quickly gained traction online, with many users saying his experience reflected a problem they knew all too well. While several noted that Bhatia at least had an expected possession date, others said they were still waiting for projects with no certainty over when, or even if, they would receive their homes.

Bhatia responded,“That is not good news. Unfortunately, India has become a zero trust transactional country.”
