Vivek Ramaswamy Booed, Forced To Leave Stage

CLEVELAND, OH – Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy was booed repeatedly during an appearance at the Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) national convention on July 29, underscoring his sometimes uneasy relationship with parts of the conservative movement as he campaigns in one of the country’s closest governor’s races.

Ramaswamy, who has President Donald Trump’s endorsement, is locked in a tight contest with Democrat Amy Acton in Ohio, a state that has leaned Republican in recent election cycles but is expected to be competitive in this year’s gubernatorial race.

The former Republican presidential candidate was scheduled to speak for about 30 minutes but left the stage after roughly 14 minutes as audience members repeatedly interrupted him with boos and heckling. Videos posted on social media showed the crowd challenging him on issues including Israel and immigration almost as soon as he began speaking.

At one point, Ramaswamy dismissed the interruptions, telling a heckler, “You want to give a speech? … Well, you can get on when they give you a slot. So, until they do, you can sit down.”

The audience was not uniformly hostile. Ramaswamy received applause when he praised capitalism, calling it “the best system known to man to lift people up from poverty.”

But the mood shifted again after he told the audience, “No matter what happens… the people in my generation, we’ve already made it, and we’re going to be fine. It’s going to be your generation that pays the price.”

One attendee shouted profanities at him, and Ramaswamy ended his remarks shortly afterward, leaving the stage to another round of boos.

The audience does not necessarily reflect the views of Ohio Republicans or the state’s broader electorate but the reaction is a sign that Ramaswamy continues to face skepticism from some members of the MAGA base despite Trump’s backing. In late 2024, he drew sharp criticism from conservative activists after arguing that American companies often preferred the work ethic of foreign-born employees over that of some native-born workers, comments that sparked backlash across right-wing social media.

Meanwhile his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton, is aiming to become the state’s first Democratic governor in two decades.
