India Exports Over 7,000 Tons Of Makhana To US, Middle East

NEW DELHI-India exported more than 7,000 metric tons of Makhana and value-added Makhana products to over 20 international destinations, including the US, the Middle East and Africa, in FY26, the government said.

Bihar accounts for nearly 85 per cent of India’s Makhana production.

In a key development, India facilitated the first-ever commercial sea shipment of 18 metric tons of Mithila Makhana to Australia. The consignment, sourced from Makhana growers in Darbhanga district of Bihar, is expected to enhance the global presence of the state’s flagship GI product and expand export opportunities for farmers.

According to the Commerce Ministry, the initiative has enabled farmers to realize nearly 18 per cent higher returns than prevailing market rates, underscoring the benefits of export-led value chains and direct market access.

Bihar Agriculture Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha said Makhana is closely linked to the state’s identity and that increased participation of Bihar-based exporters in global trade would help farmers secure better prices.

The minister added that continued support would be extended to the Phori community, whose traditional skills are integral to Makhana processing. (IANS)
