Brendan Carr Will Lead Federal Communications Commission

WASHINGTON DC (ANI) – President-elect Donald Trump on November 17 named Commissioner Brendan Carr as the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The FCC regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and US territories. An independent US government agency overseen by Congress, the Commission is the federal agency responsible for implementing and enforcing America’s communications law and regulations.

Trump said, “Commissioner Carr currently serves as the senior Republican on the FCC. Before that, he was the FCC’s General Counsel. I first nominated Commissioner Carr to the FCC in 2017, and he has been confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate three times.”

The statement added, “His current term runs through 2029, and, because of his great work, I will now be designating him as permanent Chairman.”

The statement by Trump further called Carr a “warrior for Free Speech.” “Commissioner Carr is a warrior for Free Speech and has fought against the regulatory Lawfare that has stifled Americans’ Freedoms and held back our Economy. He will end the regulatory onslaught that has been crippling America’s Job Creators and Innovators and ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America. Congratulations to Chairman Brendan Carr on a job well done. Lead us into a great future, Brendan!” the statement added.

Notably, Carr has served at the FCC since 2012, including as an advisor to then FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai. Earlier he worked as an attorney specializing in Appellate, Litigation, and Regulatory matters.

Previously, Commissioner Carr clerked on the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit for Judge Dennis Shedd. After attending Georgetown University for his undergrad, Commissioner Carr earned his JD Magna Cum Laude from the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law where he served as an Editor of the Catholic University Law Review.

  • Brendan Carr has been campaigning for this job with promises to do the bidding of Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Carr doesn’t care about protecting the public interest; he got this job because he will carry out Trump and Musk’s personal vendettas. While styling himself as a free-speech champion, Carr refused to stand up when Trump threatened to take away the broadcast licenses of TV stations for daring to fact check him during the campaign. This alone should be disqualifying.

The public needs a watchdog looking out for them at this independent agency, not an attack dog for Trump and Musk. Carr’s agenda includes giving away billions in taxpayer dollars to favored corporations like Musk’s Starlink satellite business. He supports media mergers and will give Trump’s cronies control of even more TV and radio stations. He’s committed to ending Net Neutrality and undermining the FCC’s ability to hold accountable companies like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon for abusing internet users.

Carr is the only sitting government official who co-authored a chapter in the extremist Project 2025 policy roadmap that will apparently guide this administration. His close relationships with far-right zealots and his craven cozying up to the CEOs he’s supposed to be regulating tell you everything about the kind of FCC chairman he will be. For more than a year now Carr has been auditioning for this job, desperate to gain Trump’s attention and show how he’s willing to bend the rules and twist the law to serve this administration. His groveling is now being rewarded with a promotion, and it’s the American public who will pay a heavy price.
