ELK GROVE, CA – California Congressman and physician Ami Bera is taking a stand against the Trump administration’s proposed cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), warning that the reductions would have devastating consequences for medical research, patients, and the economy.

Bera, who has long advocated for increased investment in biomedical research, emphasized the critical role of NIH funding in supporting groundbreaking research and life-saving clinical trials. The proposed cuts threaten over $800 million in NIH funding for California alone, putting jobs and world-class institutions at risk.

“As a doctor, I know how important it is to protect funding for medical research that saves lives,” Bera stated. “That’s why I’m fighting back against these reckless attempts to slash funding. If we allow this funding to disappear, we risk losing our competitive edge in biomedical research to countries like China and Russia.”

Bera joined 39 of his California colleagues in demanding that the administration reverse its proposed cuts. Beyond California, the administration’s plan to block more than $4 billion in NIH funding nationwide could force laboratories to shut down, halt research on diseases such as cancer and heart disease and endanger future medical breakthroughs.

To counter the funding reductions, Bera also joined over 150 House Democrats in urging the NIH to restore research funding. “I will keep fighting to ensure that scientists and doctors have the resources they need to find cures, develop treatments, and save lives,” he affirmed.

With the future of medical research on the line, Bera continues to rally support to prevent what he describes as a disastrous rollback in funding that could hinder scientific progress for years to come.
