Biden Admin’s AI Safety and Security Board Includes Indian American Tech Leaders

WASHINGTON, DC – The Department of Homeland Security has established the Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board. This board comprises over 20 executives from technology and critical infrastructure sectors, civil rights leaders, academics, and policymakers.

The Board will advise the Secretary of Homeland Security, critical infrastructure stakeholders, private sector entities, and the broader public on ensuring the safe and secure integration of AI technology into the nation’s critical infrastructure. Its recommendations will help stakeholders leverage AI technologies more responsibly and prepare for potential disruptions that could impact national security, public health, or safety.

President Biden directed Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas to form the Board, which includes representatives from various sectors such as software and hardware companies, critical infrastructure operators, public officials, civil rights organizations, and academia.

Notable inaugural members include Indian American leaders Satya Nadella of Microsoft, Sundar Pichai of Alphabet, Arvind Krishna of IBM, Shantanu Narayen of Adobe and Arati Prabhakar, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology. Others include Sam Altman of AI, Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Maya Wiley of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

The Board’s establishment aligns with the DHS Homeland Threat Assessment of 2024, which underscores the threat AI-assisted tools pose to economic security and critical infrastructure. It warns of potential cyber-attacks on vital systems like pipelines and railways, with hostile nation-states like China actively developing AI technologies to undermine U.S. cyber defenses.
