Boyfriend Arrested After Shalini Singh’s Body Is Found In Landfill

HAMILTON  — Police have charged a 42-year-old man with second-degree murder after partial human remains found in a Hamilton-area landfill were confirmed to belong to Shalini Singh.

Jeffery Smith, Singh’s live-in partner, was arrested on June 20 in a parking lot in Burlington, near his family’s home, police said. In addition to the murder charge, Smith faces a second charge of indignity to human remains, stemming from the alleged disposal of Singh’s body through their apartment building’s garbage system, CBC reported.

Singh, 32, was last seen alive on December 4, 2023, after a phone call with her mother, Anita Singh. Investigators believe she was killed shortly afterward inside the apartment she shared with Smith. Following weeks of reviewing surveillance footage, police determined Singh never left the building alive. Their search for evidence led them to the Glanbrook landfill, where human remains were recovered on May 21 and later confirmed through DNA testing.

Smith has a documented history of violence and mental health issues, CBC noted. In 2012, he was found not criminally responsible for attacking his mother and assaulting a neighbor due to a mental disorder. He spent years under psychiatric supervision.
