BURBANK, CA– Mental health advocate Meera Varma, who has worked on White House initiatives, is recovering after a stabbing attack at her Burbank home that killed her mother, Arti authorities said. A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder.

Police have identified the suspect as Sergio Fraire.

The attack claimed the life of Arti Varma, a second-grade teacher at Bret Harte Elementary School. Meera Varma, 25, was hospitalized and remains in stable condition, officials said. Reports said Meera Varma’s father, Arti Varma’s husband, was in India at the time of the attack.

After reviewing surveillance footage, witness statements, and other evidence, detectives identified Fraire as a person of interest, police said.

A SWAT team later served a search warrant at a residence about two miles from the crime scene and took Fraire into custody without incident. Authorities said evidence was also recovered from the property.

Meera Varma is widely known for her advocacy on mental health awareness and suicide prevention. She has participated in initiatives of former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and entertainment star Oprah Winfrey.

During a 2023 TEDx talk, Varma spoke publicly about surviving a suicide attempt in 2018.

“We may think that we have six degrees of separation between ourselves and a person who has been affected by suicide,” she said. “But I can guarantee that you all have only one degree of separation between yourself and a person who almost died by suicide. And that someone is me.”

She also described the support she received from her mother during that period.

“My mom squeezed me even tighter, looked me directly in the eyes and said, ‘I love you. I’m not going anywhere. I’m here. I’m here,’” Varma said.

Friends and colleagues remembered Arti Varma as a devoted educator and a warm presence in the school community.

Authorities said the motive remains under investigation.
