
CA Seminar Tackles Diabetes And BP With Free Screenings & Expert Advice

ORANGE, CA – The Global Peace Foundation and the UNA-USA Long Beach Chapter on June 14, hosted a community health seminar titled “Recent Advances in the Treatment of Hypertension and Diabetes” here. The event aimed to raise awareness about two of the most prevalent and often undiagnosed health threats in the Indian American community: diabetes and hypertension—both widely known as “silent killers.”
The seminar offered free health screenings for all attendees, including blood pressure checks, upper body fat percentage analysis, and breast health screenings. Two individuals with high blood pressure were identified during the event and were promptly referred to their physicians, underscoring the immediate value of such outreach efforts.

The program opened with remarks from Dr. Manorama S. Gupta, Founder and President of the Global Peace Foundation and President of the UNA-USA Long Beach Chapter. After a moment of silence honoring Ramesh Ramnani, a long-serving community leader and member of both associations, as well as victims of the recent Air India plane crash. Gupta then highlighted the importance of preventive health and expressed gratitude to health professionals and participants.
The expert panel featured a range of distinguished speakers. Dr. Radha Menon, an internal medicine and geriatrics specialist, presented an overview of diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Deepti Upparapalli, a cardiologist and assistant clinical professor of medicine at UC Irvine, discussed the cardiovascular risks associated with these conditions. Dr. Arvind Mehta, a nephrologist, spoke on the impact of diabetes on kidney health. Dr. Asmat Noor, a dentist, addressed how dental health can reveal systemic disease. Dr. Sangeeta Shrivastava, a registered dietitian, offered practical advice on meal planning and nutrition for managing chronic conditions.

An interactive Q&A session followed, providing attendees the opportunity to ask questions and receive personalized insights from the panel. Yorba Linda City Councilman Shivinder Singh, the event’s Guest of Honor, delivered remarks praising the initiative and its contribution to public health education.
Event Chair Dr. Sukrit Mukherjee and Co-Chair Captain Aparna Hande were recognized for their dedication to organizing the seminar. Cultural performances by students from Dhoon Dance School and Laasya Dance School added energy and spirit to the gathering.
The event concluded with a nutritious lunch, fostering community bonding and conversations around health.
