Condemn Terrorist Attack, Let’s Bring Peace

From Raj Kumar, Honolulu, HI

Founder, Gandhi International Institute for Peace

Gandhi International Institute for Peace strongly condemns the terrorist attack on civilians, tourists and kidnapping of men, women and children during the Yom Kippur festival in Israel on October 7, 2023.  It was a heinous crime against humanity.

It is time to bring back the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi to the modern world to promote world peace. Mahatma Gandhi once stated,“You must be the change, if you wish to see a change in the world.”

Even though it is an old geo-political issue that has been going on in the Middle East since 1947, we urge the people of Israel and Palestinian National Authority to restore calmness and find a nonviolent solution by implementing the two-nation theory solution rather than the use of terrorist groups as proxies to kill innocent civilians and disrupt peace and communal harmony in that region.

No nation benefits from a war.  A war means death, destruction and devastation and human civilization moves backward. It is time for “Peace Now More Than Ever.

Violence cannot be stopped by violence.  It can only be stopped by nonviolent methods to include positive communication, development of trust between two religious and political groups and acceptance of each other by keeping their differences aside. Both groups need to seek diplomatic solutions through the United Nations.

  • Principle of non-violence can work while dealing with normal people who appreciate this principle but while dealing with terrorists, who achieve their goal of terrorizing people they hate through acts of violence, it would be dangerously imprudent to even think of adopting the non-violent approach because that would only make their job easier. I personally always liked Ronald Reagan’s “Peace through strength” doctrine.

The concept of “peace through strength” is often associated with military and foreign policy strategies that emphasize maintaining a strong and capable military as a means to deter aggression and promote stability. While having a strong military can be an important component of a nation’s security posture, its effectiveness in addressing terrorist attacks specifically can vary based on the circumstances. Here are some considerations:
Deterrence: A strong military can serve as a deterrent to state-sponsored terrorism or attacks from hostile nations. The idea is that potential aggressors may think twice if they know they will face a formidable military response.
Defensive Capability: A strong military can enhance a country’s ability to defend against terrorist attacks. It can respond quickly and effectively to threats and can prevent attacks from occurring.
Counterterrorism Operations: Military forces can play a role in counterterrorism operations, particularly when dealing with terrorist groups that have a significant military capability. Special operations forces, for instance, can conduct targeted operations against terrorists.
Global Stability: A strong military presence can contribute to global stability, which, in turn, can reduce the conditions that lead to terrorism. Strong alliances and partnerships can also be fostered through military strength, enabling cooperation in counterterrorism efforts.
However, it’s important to note that addressing terrorism requires a multi-faceted approach that goes beyond military strength. Some key points to consider:
Addressing Root Causes: Many terrorists are driven by political, social, and economic grievances. Addressing these underlying issues is essential in preventing the radicalization and recruitment of terrorists.
Intelligence and Law Enforcement: Effective intelligence-gathering and law enforcement efforts are critical in identifying and apprehending terrorists.
Diplomacy: Diplomatic efforts are often necessary to build alliances, seek peaceful solutions to conflicts, and isolate terrorist groups.
Public Opinion: The perception of a nation’s foreign policy and military actions can influence public opinion, both domestically and internationally. An overly aggressive approach can sometimes backfire and generate support for terrorist organizations.

  • Would Gandhiji sit idle folding his hands in a prayer mode, if he were a Palestanian and Israelis razed the territory with bombs, missiles, artilary and guns?

Wake up and live in 21st century, where freedom is fought with force

  • Israel immediately launched a blistering counteroffensive and officially declared war on Hamas the next day.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formed an emergency government and wartime cabinet late Wednesday as well. In a televised statement, Netanyahu said, “Every Hamas terrorist is a dead man.” His defense minister, Yoav Gallant, echoed the harsh words and promised to eliminate Hamas, saying, “we will wipe them off the face of the Earth.”

As of Thursday, the sixth day of fighting, at least 1,537 people have been killed in Gaza, including roughly 500 children, according to the Palestinian health ministry. An additional 6,612 were wounded by Israeli airstrikes.
