Court Dismisses Netflix, Allows Dhanush’s Suit Against Nayanthara To Proceed

CHENNAI – The Madras High Court on January 28 dismissed Netflix’s plea to reject a copyright infringement suit filed by actor Dhanush against actress Nayanthara. Dhanush, through his production company Wunderbar Films, has sought Rs 10 crore in damages for the unauthorized use of behind-the-scenes footage from the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in Nayanthara’s Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.
Netflix had argued that the case should be filed in Kancheepuram, where the plaintiff’s office is located, and claimed that the cause of action arose outside the jurisdiction of the Madras High Court. However, Justice Abdul Quddhose rejected these arguments and upheld the court’s jurisdiction to hear the case.
In addition to the damages claim, Dhanush’s legal team has filed an application for an injunction to prevent further use of the disputed footage. The court has scheduled a hearing for February 5 to address this request.
Wunderbar Films asserts that Nayanthara signed an agreement in 2014 granting the company perpetual rights to her performance, likeness, and voice in connection with Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Under this agreement, any footage of the actress captured during the film’s production belongs to the company and requires prior consent or licensing for use.
