NEW DELHI, (ANI) – CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury passed away on September 12 after a prolonged illness. The 72-year-old leader had been receiving treatment for pneumonia at AIIMS, New Delhi, since August 19. In a statement, the hospital confirmed that Yechury’s family has donated his body for teaching and research purposes.

Born on August 12, 1952, in Chennai, Yechury completed his graduation at Delhi University and pursued a post-graduate degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He is survived by his wife, Seema Chishti Yechury, and their two children.

Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sadness, saying, “He was a leading light of the Left and was known for his ability to connect across the political spectrum.”

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, shared his personal grief, recalling Yechury as a friend and a protector of the Idea of India. He posted a tribute along with a photo of them together on X.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called Yechury’s demise a significant loss for national politics. Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu described him as a stalwart and one of the most respected voices in Indian politics.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also remembered him as a seasoned parliamentarian known for his knowledge and eloquence.
