NEW DELHI – A new study suggests that indulging in dark chocolate or berries may do more than satisfy cravings—it could also enhance memory and reduce stress. Researchers at Japan’s Shibaura Institute of Technology found that flavanols, natural compounds abundant in cocoa and berries, improve brain function and protect against neuronal damage.

Published in Current Research in Food Science, the study shows that flavanol consumption triggers physiological responses similar to those produced by exercise, stimulating the central nervous system and improving attention, arousal, and memory. “Stress responses elicited by flavanols are similar to those elicited by physical exercise,” said lead researcher Dr. Yasuyuki Fujii. “Moderate intake of flavanols, despite their poor bioavailability, can improve health and quality of life.”

The team tested the effects of flavanols on 10-week-old mice, administering doses of 25 or 50 mg/kg, while a control group received only water. Mice given flavanols demonstrated higher motor activity, stronger exploratory behavior, and improved learning and memory.

Flavanol intake also boosted neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine—chemicals that regulate motivation, focus, and stress response. Enzymes responsible for producing and transporting these neurotransmitters were also found to increase, strengthening brain signaling.

Additionally, higher urinary levels of stress-related hormones and greater activity in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus—a key stress-control center—were observed.

The findings suggest that a little dark chocolate or a handful of berries may offer brain benefits comparable to a light workout. (IANS)
