Ganesh Festival Draws Thousands To Philadelphia’s Bharatiya Temple

PHILADELPHIA, PA -About 2,000 devotees and community members from the Greater Philadelphia area and neighboring states took part in the Philadelphia Ganesh Festival procession and celebrations at Bharatiya Temple on September 14.

The festival began September 14 and will continue through September 25, with daily religious ceremonies, devotional activities, cultural programs and Maha Prasad.

Families gathered at the temple to welcome Lord Ganesha and participate in the traditional procession and prayers.

The opening day featured “Krishna… Ek Anokha Nrityavishkar,” a classical dance-drama presented by Guru Sonia Parchure and her group. The production portrayed the life and spiritual journey of Lord Krishna through Kathak, abhinaya, music, choreography and storytelling.

A second cultural program was presented September 15, continuing the festival’s evening schedule of music, dance, devotion and Indian cultural performances.

Dr. Ravi Murarka, a longtime member of the Greater Philadelphia Indian-American community, said such celebrations help families pass those traditions on to their children and grandchildren.

“For families who have made America their home, festivals like this give us an opportunity to introduce our children and grandchildren to the traditions, values, devotion, and cultural heritage with which many of us grew up in India,” Murarka said. “It is especially meaningful to see younger generations participating and learning about their roots while celebrating together as one community.”
