Good News: Sarus Crane Population Increasing In India
LUCKNOW, (IANS) – The population of the Sarus crane, named the state bird of Uttar Pradesh in 2015, has been increasing and the trend is expected to continue this year too, forest officials said.
The information came after the first round of the two-day Sarus census.
In 2021, the Forest Department survey counts put the Sarus crane population figure at 17,329 in 2021, 19,188 in 2022 and 19,522 in 2023 and the trend is expected to continue this year too.
The process is time-consuming as all the data needs to be collected from different districts and ranges.
Despite their grandeur, Sarus cranes population face significant threats due to habitat loss, degradation, and human disturbance. Wetland drainage, agricultural expansion, and environment pollution have led to declining populations in many regions. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore their habitats, raise awareness, and ensure the survival of this iconic species. The Sarus crane is a symbol of fidelity and longevity in many cultures and continues to inspire admiration and conservation efforts worldwide.
