GOPIO Writes To Trump Over Remarks On Citizenship And India

NEW YORK,NY – The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) has written to U.S. President Donald Trump, raising concern over rhetoric endorsed by the White House that included remarks on India, China and birthright citizenship.

The communication, issued by GOPIO International Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham and President Prakash Shah, follows the April 23 promotion of comments attributed to radio host Michael Savage. The leaders described the remarks as a “direct affront to the dignity of millions of citizens,” and said such language risks undermining the United States’ economic strength and strategic interests.

Dr. Abraham said that questioning legal residency and birthright citizenship could accelerate a “talent shift,” as skilled professionals prioritize opportunity, stability and respect.

GOPIO noted that Indian Americans are among the most highly educated and economically successful communities in the United States, contributing across technology, healthcare, academia and entrepreneurship. It added that Chinese Americans play a significant role in the STEM workforce.

Addressing the global context, Shah said India and China rank among the world’s largest economies under purchasing power parity. “These nations are key global actors. Language that diminishes them undermines the mutual respect necessary for constructive international engagement,” he said.

The letter described India as a strategic partner of the United States and said such rhetoric could complicate bilateral relations.

GOPIO also said questioning birthright citizenship challenges a foundational principle of the United States and risks creating uncertainty among law-abiding residents.

The organization called for a retraction of the endorsement of the remarks and urged a reaffirmation of inclusion and equal opportunity. “The future strength of the United States lies in its ability to attract, retain, and empower talent from around the world,” the letter said.
