Harris Backs Ending Filibuster To Restore National Abortion Rights

WASHINGTON, DC (REUTERS) – Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee in November’s presidential election, on September 24 said she backed ending a procedural tool that currently requires a supermajority in the Senate to pass legislation to protect the right to an abortion nationally.
Since a 2022 Supreme Court decision overturned the Roe v. Wade ruling on abortion, about a dozen U.S. states have passed laws banning or severely limiting abortion rights, which has become a key issue in the 2024 election.
Harris wants Congress to pass a national law codifying access to safe abortion.
The support of 60 senators is required to pass most legislation in the upper chamber at present. On September 24, Harris said in an interview that she wants to lower the threshold to a simple majority.
“We should eliminate the filibuster for Roe… to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom, and for the ability of every person and every woman to make decisions about their own body,” she told Wisconsin Public Radio.
Democrats removed the filibuster in 2013 on judicial nominees and Republicans went further in 2017 to include Supreme Court nominees.
Some Democrats have called for getting rid of the 60-vote requirement entirely, but have yet to do so, partly due to opposition from centrist senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, who will not return to the Senate next year.

During the debate between Newsome and DeSantis, Newsome admonished DeSantis for calling her Kamaalaa Harrris. He said it is Kaamalaa, and how dare he mispronounce her first name! During many appearances on CNN and MSNBC among others, most Harris proponents have said the same to Trump proponents. Well, her name comes from Sanskrit word Kamal meaning Lotus. Kamal is the male version and Kamalaa the female version of the same. I have a male cousin named Kamal. Her name is pronounced Kamalaa with the last two “aa” simply emphasizing here to pronounce it with an “aa” sound at end – but not after K or “m”! They are and were all wrong, as is VP Harris herself! If she truly considered herself half or even part India origin person, she would have insisted on pronouncing it correctly. She has not. That tells you a lot.
She touts her being brought up by her mother who is accurately of Tamil-Indian origin. Then why did she never visit her mother’s birthplace even once in 4 years that she has been the Vice President? She did visit Africa twice emphasizing the other half, but never the half that brought her up throughout after her father abandoned them all, and instilled values in her? To my Indian-American supporters of VP Kamala Harris, I say ponder that. This too tells a lot. Deeds speak louder than words. Don’t keep hoping for something that is not going to happen. Cooking Dosas with Mindi Kaling does not cut it. It is yet another fake. A ruse to get your votes, money and then no real follow up.
The real Indian-American in both tickets that we Indian-Americans should be proud of, cognizant of, and shout from the rooftops about is Usha Vance who is proud of her Indian ancestry and even taught JD Vance to like & respect her heritage, like and cook Indian food and her Hindu culture. Appropriately, she is openly proud of it without wearing it on her sleeve. She is immensely smart, well-spoken and of course very well educated that we can truly be happy about and proud of. That is what we should do and be as Indian-Americans who have assimilated here as many of us and have contributed to this country like most of us. Usha Vance is not fake Indian-American.
